snapping turtle

Chelydra serpentina

Description:

This is my first snapping turtle photo! I would have missed it but my dog didn't. I estimated the shell was ~18" long.

Habitat:

reclaimed wetlands

Notes:

Snapping turtles have evolved the special ability to snap because unlike other turtles, they are too large to hide in their own shells when confronted.

Thanks bandhturtlesite. This is only the 2nd time I've seen a snapping turtle in the wild. I was pretty excited to get these photos. He didn't seem agitated but I didn't know how close I could get.

Wow great find. That turtle has probable been alive for over ten years. That is a pretty big snapper.
