Lovely large deciduous tree with large 5 fingered leaves and spikey fruit. The bark is often flaking. The tree gets its species name from Balkan history where it was recognised in ancient Greek history and literature. The leaves and bark have been used medically, the twigs and roots for fabric dye and the wood often called Lacewood is valued as a hardwood for indoor furniture.
