I hear you - I always leave my camera behind when I need it most. We spotted an egret at The Pool as well. That's a great little corner of Central Park.

Was it Turtle Pond? We got some great shots there when we were in Central Park last summer.
They just banned this species as a pet last fall in Maine.
They like to hide out in the blossoms of brightly colored flowers and wait for bees and flies.
Check this link and see if it looks right. It might be one of the camellias.
