Sign In to followAwesome series, and beautiful bird. Congratulations on 1500 spottings! I'm getting ready to hit 200 - I'll join the 1500 club one day.. It might just take another year or two, haha.
These little guys (along with Hooded Mergansers) have been my arch-rival for the past year - I just never seem to be able to get a good picture of them. Nice shots.
Great Picture. As common and "boring" as these birds are, they're pretty interesting if you give them a chance. I believe it's a Turkey Vulture though, as LindaKing pointed out.
Very good information. I've always wondered what exactly these little guys do - Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the ID, Tom.
Yeah, from what I've read they're pretty common but this was my first time seeing one. He was one of the only ducks out in a refuge that usually has thousands of birds in the water - it was very cold out.
You struck gold with that one man. I'll be moving to Florida in a year or two - I'll be keeping my fingers crossed hoping to see one of these guys, but finding one as impressive as this is going to complicate matters even more. Congratulations on the find, and good pictures to document it too.
Amazing pictures, and video too. I never knew they fed their babies like that - very impressive. Do the young of this species have the ability to forage, or do they depend on their parents for food at that age? All of the young waterfowl species I've seen are much too hyper and impatient; they'd be pecking every grain in sight while waiting to be fed by the parent.
p.s. - Those little guys have some BIG feet, haha.
