tjhloh Spotted Codling
Spotted Codling commented on by tjhloh Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada9 years ago

It's a phycid hake (Family Phycidae), a group closely related to the true cods (Gadidae). I'm not familiar with this group as we don't get them out in the Pacific. Based on the location where this was caught and descriptions from Fishbase, I suspect this is the spotted codling (Urophycis regia).

tjhloh Coho Salmon
Coho Salmon commented on by tjhloh Portland, Oregon, USA9 years ago

This is not a coho but rather a steelhead (sea-run rainbow trout).

tjhloh Unknown spotting
Unknown spotting commented on by tjhloh Newport, Oregon, USA9 years ago

It's definitely a smelt of some kind. Can't tell species from photo.

tjhloh Pacific halibut
Pacific halibut commented on by tjhloh Oregon, USA9 years ago

This is definitely a starry flounder, not a halibut!

tjhloh Northern Halibut
Northern Halibut commented on by tjhloh Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada9 years ago

I think this is a juvenile starry flounder, not a halibut.

tjhloh Pacific Sand Sole (Flounder)
Pacific Sand Sole (Flounder) commented on by tjhloh Seattle, Washington, USA9 years ago

I would say this is a rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata) rather than a sand sole. The sand sole has a much larger mouth and has a nearly straight lateral line, compared to the arch seen here.

tjhloh Kelp Greenling
Kelp Greenling commented on by tjhloh Newport, Oregon, USA9 years ago

It's a greenling, most likely a female kelp greenling (Hexagrammos decagrammos) though the color seems off.
