Cairina moschata
A large duck with a black and white body. Some of the top feathers on the back are iridescent dark green. The face is red and black mottled skin with a black and white speckled head and neck.
These birds are from Mexico and other areas way south of where I found this population, but it's not uncommon these days for feral populations to pop up in United States parklands in areas with a more temperate climate. (We don't see them in Chicago... at least I haven't yet!)
These ducks were so large, with the wrinkled red face that my father's first reaction was, "Look! Turkeys!"
