Myrmicinid ants

Monomorium rubriceps

Description:

Small 'muscly' ants appearing mostly red and black but quite translucent in some parts. Double petiole! About 6mm long.

Habitat:

On Acacia mearnsii stems in a local nature reserve.

Notes:

Pupae lack cocoons; some species retain a sting; petioles of Myrmicinae consist of two nodes.

I found them under bark.
Ken's field is Hymenoptera.
