Bloodroot

Description:

This is one of our first wildflowers of spring. They spread out in patches, and the roots are where they get their name. As you might imagine, when you break a piece of the tuber-like root, you see the blood colored juice. I have heard that indians used it as a dye.

The second photo is of the double bloodroot, slightly less common.
