Mentaxya ignicollis
Moth attracted to the porch light. Need help with ID please.
NOCTUIIDAE - NOCTUINAE
I tell you my secret... 5-1-5-1...
Looking at the picture: 5 sec. for the family, 1 min. for the genus and 5 min. for the species, 1 h for further re-search. If it is not a personally very interesting one I will not spend more than 1 h for an ID. I have quite a good memory of shots, so sometimes I come back in some days or weeks (sometimes even months) to look for a definite ID. The rest is searching and searching an re-searching... And you need some phantasy! Why not looking in Australian leps for a Thai moth? Get the family/genus, then go back and looking for similar species in Thailand? In addition you need good websites and even better books. That's all ;-)... And sometimes you need an excellent hairdresser to get rid of the grey hairs!
I can well imagine. How you get from the supporting sites to the ID I cannot figure out, but will leave it in your expert hands.
Thanks for the help Bayucca. Moth ID's are giving me gray hair. Will add the other photos I have of different angles.
Noctuidae, Noctuinae, Mentaxya sp., Mentaxya ignicollis. That was a tough one! There are only these 2 links on the web and all VERY bad specimens! You have to look very carefully to all in the Bold link and compare. YOU have definitely the best shot on the net!!
