Northern Harrier (hunting)

Circus cyaneus

Description:

Marsh hawk that prefers to fly low, and perching low. Owlish eyes and long tail with white rump.
Witnessed this hawk hunting during high tide. Ridgeway's Rails and Soras were having difficulty hiding and the hawk circled until it was able to grab one. I discovered by the exit photos that it was a Sora.

Habitat:

Marshlands

Congrats! This spotting has been featured as a PN Fact of the Day.

Project Noah Fact of the Day: Feathers are one of the distinguishing characteristics of birds. They have a wide variety of functions too, they are important for flight, camouflage, regulation of body temperature, territorial dominance, and in attracting a mate. Feathers are made of keratin, a protein which is also used to make horn and hair by different animals and beaks by birds.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

Thank you Geoffrey. I got lucky when I was only go there to see the Rails because of the extreme high tide. The Harrier was circling and I could hear squawking from either the Sora, Virgina or Ridgeway's Rail.
