Bagworm Moth

Dahlica triquetrella

Description:

The case, triangular in cross section and tapered at both ends, is covered in sand, frass and bits of dead insect. After selecting a suitable site and sewing the front of the case shut, the larva pupates in the case. In March or April the pupa extrudes from the case for the wingless female to emerge and lay her eggs in the vacated case. In the Netherlands only the parthenogenetic wingless female form has been recorded, but males can be found in other parts of Europe.

Habitat:

Attached to wall of house.

Notes:

I spotted two 'bags' in March and decided to keep an eye on them. In April, both females pupated and laid their eggs in their cases. After less than a day, the females died.
