Black Swallowtail Butterfly (female)

Description:

The upper surface of the wings is mostly black. On the inner edge of the hindwing is a black spot centered in larger orange spot. The hindwing of the female has an iridescent blue band.

Habitat:

This one is taking a break from laying eggs on the parsley and nectaring on the Tall Verbena.

Notes:

The garden is about half an acre of native plants specifically planted for wildlife. The main water source is a pond that is filtered by two gravel streams. It is on a peninsula by Lake Lewisville Lake TX.
