Reddish Egret (white morph)

Egretta rufescens

Description:

30". Neck long, with long shaggy feathers; bill long, fairly thick, pink, black-tipped; legs long, slaty. Dark morph (more common): body and wings slaty gray; head and neck reddish brown. White morph: body and wings white; bill pink at base, black at tip. Immature: white with black bill.

Habitat:

Shallow open waters, salt, brackish;mudflats; inland (rare). Resident in Florida, breeds from Keys north to Tampa Bay and Merrit Island

Notes:

Rushes awkwardly about shallow water, chasing fish; creates canopy with wings to lure fish I to shade. Voice; gutteral croaks.
