American coot

Description:

15". Adult sooty grey; head and neck black; bill thick, white, black near tip; sides of undertail white. Feet not webbed, but toes lobed. Immature paler grey below; bill silvery. Dives and skitters over surface to become airborne like a diving duck, swims like a duck-but not a duck. Usually in rafts (flocks). Voice is grating kuk notes.
