Australian Emperor

Hemianax papuensis

Description:

A very large dragonfly with complex abdominal markings in yellow and black. Plain pale, French grey eyes. Clear wings. Frons has a black T-shaped mark on top. About 70mm long.

Habitat:

Resting on eucalyptus leaves at the edge of a local nature reserve. Kings Park.

Notes:

Order: Odonata
Family: Aeshnidae

Thanks everyone. I am overwhelmed by your appreciation. I must say I was impressed with my little pocket camera. The truth is this the first time I've been able to get this close to a "giant" of a dragonfly - it was so co-operative and fresh-looking. I had good access, light, etc. The wings are magic aren't they ? like lead light. However do they not get damaged...? I was very lucky.
@ Dr Sherpa - no tubes ! just a cooperative subject. Thanks again.
