Also called the Thread-Waisted Wasp. Description per attached photos...they were not intimidated by close proximity to me, allowing macro photos.

Habitat:

This species was spotted in Red Rock Canyon, in the Mojave Desert. They were out at mid-day in August...the hottest time of the year.
