Black Skimmer

Rynchops niger

Description:

Black Skimmers are an usual looking sea bird. Visually looking like a large tern. Black crown to nape, with black on face to just below the eye. Black wings and back to tail. White underneath. Bill is large and long with the lower being longer then the top. Bill is orange with black half way to end. These bill is designed to skim across surface of water to feed. Legs are short for it's body and wings are long.

Habitat:

Spotted at rest on a shell bar

Notes:

Shows on map as not common to the north California, these birds have been returning every year here.
