American Kestrel

Falco sparverius

Notes:

Rescued him off the street in Detroit. Got in touch with Michigan fish and game and they sent a nice lady to come and get him. I originally thought it was a peregrine falcon, but the lady said he was a juvenile kestrel that may have been knocked out of his nest during the storm the night before. She informed me that he would be going to a rehab centre to be nursed back to health then returned to the wild.

Detroit is wonderful, and so are kestrels! What a great combination! Great job calling the Animal Rehabber! Some people think they can do it themselves, and it usually ends tragically. You did the right thing, tikachu!

Your "he" is actually a "she" and she's adorable!! She's an American Kestrel, and she still has downy feathers on her head!!! She is old enough that she has probably fledged (left the nest), but wasn't too good at the whole flying thing...at our facility, we call them "displaced branchers". Nice pic!
