King Swallowtail Butterfly

Description:

Large Swallowtail. There were many taking nectar from these malinche plant flowers. There was also a citrus tree about ten feet away..the perfect mix for a heraclides!

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 6 weeks into the rainy season

My eyes see 4 spots and no spiky spots as it is usually seen in Cresphontes. But in some cases my eyes are not good enough ;-)... I still would tend to Thoas, but I am not 100% sure! If you take Thoas you should also change the common name to Thoas or King Swallowtail.

I looked a them both in my InBio Butterlies of Cr book and it looked more like cresphontes. However, you are the expert!

I am sure you are correct. It is likely the same as the caterpillar that I posted after this...

This might be a tricky one to separate, but in my eyes it looks more like a Heraclides thoas than Heraclides cresphontes.
