Cotton Stainer

Dysdercus suturellus

Description:

The cotton stainer was once believed to be the number 1 pest of FL and decimated cotton plantations around the state. Now, because of more effective means of pest control and better cotton harvesting methods, it has lost it's importance. The nymphs have 5 instars and generally are seen as "red bugs" or "blood bugs" as in the first two photos. The adults have black wings as seen in the third photo.

Habitat:

Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, FL.

Notes:

Found these the first time I visited this reserve, but only got fuzzy pictures that everyone still loved. This time I went looking for them and got better pictures.
