Asclepias
Milkweed seed pods have opened and the seeds are being spread by the wind. Asclepias species produce their seeds in follicles. The seeds, which are arranged in overlapping rows, have white silky filament-like hairs known as pappus, silk, or floss. The follicles ripen and split open and the seeds, each carried by several dried pappus, are blown by the wind.
This was in section 71 of the LBJ Grasslands. It was a dry prairie area or mesa. The soil had ocean fossils showing.
Lyndon B. Johnson Grasslands is 20,313 acres located in north-central Texas. Before the federal government purchased them back in the late 1930s, the grasslands were mostly abandoned farms and ranches suffering from severe soil errosion from poor agricultural practices.
