Eumenes fraternus
Roughly 10-12 millimeters in body length, colored black with white markings as shown.
Nectaring on White Sweet Clover flowers along the edge of an arroyo (dry river bed). Very sandy soil. Surrounding habitat is hilly, degraded shortgrass prairie with yucca, prickly-pear cacti, scattered elm, cottonwood trees.
This fleeting glimpse represents a western range extension for the species according to Dr. Matthias Buck of the Royal Alberta Museum in Canada, and a leading authority on vespid wasps.
