Southern Hognose Snake

Heterodon simus

Description:

A snake indigenous to the Sandhills of the southeastern United States, has an upturned snout used for digging up toads. These two were found under a sheet of metal.

Habitat:

Sandy areas, fall line Sandhills, pine Flatwoods.

Notes:

Threatened and less commonly encountered than the eastern hognose.
