Orchid Bee

Eulaema Cingulata

Description:

This is one of the largest bees I have ever seen. I have been waiting for a couple years to finally discover the pollinator of this catasetum maculatum orchid species. This bee is easily 3/4" long by 1/2" wide. They were at it all day collecting pollen. The next day the flowers were wilting.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest of NW Costa Rica 10 weeks into the rainy season.
