Unicorn Caterpillar Moth

Schizura unicornis

Description:

This moth has a very interesting way of camouflaging itself. It stands on its head and pretends to be a twig! The moth gets its name from the fact that the caterpillar has a "prominent hornlike protuberance" (per Bug Guide's description) that has reminded some folks of a unicorn's horn.

Habitat:

Suburban. Attracted to a flood light overnight.
