Red-Tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

A fairly large to medium-sized raptor which was flying around on the hills of Chatham. The call was similar to a high-pitched baby screaming repeatedly. The raptor seemed to do more soaring than flying! Characterized by the call sounding like, "Kee-eeeee-arr!"

Habitat:

High in trees ~70 feet up in a mixed deciduous-coniferuous forest.

Notes:

I apologize for the grainy photo! Full zoom and windy conditions! Maybe someone can ID by shape of raptor and sound of call.

Thanks you, Ava! I knew there was a mission like that, but I don't have the link. Do you mind pasting it here? Thanks!

Thanks ForestDragon! I am very sorry for the horrible quality of the photo, just excited to see my first wild raptor on PN!

Perhaps an immature Red Tailed Hawk. That is my best guess at this time.
