American Kestrel

Falco sparverius

Description:

A pair of American Kestrels used these vent holes within the dentil mouldings of the West Virginia State Capitol building as their nest site. They began courtship and mating in March. Then by June these nestlings could be seen in the vent holes. They fledged on June 10th, three days after these photos were taken. I believe there may have been as many as five in this clutch of nestlings. In the fifth photo one may see two male and one female juveniles peering out.

Habitat:

Urban environment, upon a 16-acre campus of government buildings.
