Southern red Bishop

Euplectes orix

Description:

Small passerine bird, a cousin to weavers (fam Ploceidae). 10 to 12 cm in length, with very bright colours - face and belly all deep black; with orange-red rest of the body.

Habitat:

Seen in marshy parts of Mukuvisi Woodlads; a protected savanna reserve in Harare city. Observed flying in and out the tall reed vegetation for two consecutive days; probably nesting inside.
