Red Fox

Vulpes vulpes

Description:

A red fox has an elongated body and relatively short limbs. The tail, which is longer than half the body length (70% of head and body length), is long, fluffy and reaches the ground when in a standing position. Their pupils are oval and vertically oriented. Nictitating membranes are present, but move only when the eyes are closed. The forepaws have five digits, while the hind feet have only four and lack dewclaws. They are very agile, being capable of jumping over 2 metre high fences and swim well.

Habitat:

Here in Belgium they live in suburban areas with prairies, grasslands and woods, close to farms and small towns. They have plenty to eat since there are many waterfowl, pheasants, mice and also the occasional chicken.

Notes:

We were returning home following the river and were regaled with this unique sight: that of a fox lazing around close to the river edge. The fox allowed us to get pretty close before he/she decided to leave crossing the bushes and causing an immediate ruccous among the nearby ducks. We had seen foxes in this area before but never long enough to make pictures of them. So this is one of our holy grails achievements for Noah!

Same with this one: I was really happy to be able to see and also photograph a fox near our home. We know they are here but is not often that you can spot one :-)

I am not sure. For us the fox was just lazing around on the riverside. It was at times taking care of its fur and at times just looking around. When we came in closer he left walking normally. Perhaps is and old specimen but it did not really look sick at the time.

Here in Belgium are relatively common although not often seen because they hide well. But there is enough nature and farmlands to sustain their population. In any case is still a vulnerable species. I am so glad I saw this one!

Thanks Ashish! I had seen foxes in this area before but normally they are too fast for me to prepare the camera and make pics. this one was enjoying the evening sunset in the riverside and did not seem bothered by our presence until we were really close. I have also seen marteens, hedgehogs etc but I still cannot show pics. All these animals are way fast, even the hedgehogs, I only see them at night and they dissappear quickly.
