I agree Rob, it is interesting. I have seen a number of immature individuals of a number of different species seemingly "practicing" at building nests. I've also observed a lot of immature male song birds attempting to sing even though it is after the breeding season. I think these are such strong, innate behaviors that immature birds can't help but act out these behaviors perhaps as a way to practice?
