Trashline Orbweaver

Cyclosa sp.

Description:

This little Cyclosa sp. can be seen quite well in the first photo. It is sitting right in the middle of its web decoration. However, as soon as I took that picture, it just vanished in a fraction of a second. It was still in the exact same place, but became invisible by adopting a horizontal posture and blending in with the trash. The only way to be sure that it is there, is to zoom in to that point on the trashline. Cyclosa spp. are masters of camouflage.

Habitat:

This Trashline Orbweaver Spider was spotted in our backyard. Its web was constructed on a sunshade that we erect in the yard, during the hottest time of the year. The last photo has not been cropped so that the web can be seen exactly as it was, strung up between the rope and the bamboo frame of our sunshade. The spider is welcome to this "habitat" until next May, when it will be disassembled before the rains arrive.
