Rose-ringed Parakeet

Description:

The rose-ringed parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a red or black neck-ring and the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck rings. Indian rose-ringed parakeets measure on average 40 cm in length including the tail feathers, a large portion of their total length. In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call and a distinctive green colour.

Habitat:

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons. One block is currently opened to the public. Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammal and 215 bird species.

Notes:

This little fellow was busy doing something to its nest, whether he was digging stuff out or feeding little ones inside I can not tell. He was not the only one around but I could not take a good picture of the other one.
