Citronella Ants

Lasius sp.

Description:

This is a tiny yellow ant about 3 mm (1/10-1/20 in) in length. Has tiny eyes compared to size of head (when compared with many other ants) and a back with a notch obvious in profile.

Habitat:

This nest was under a rock along a lake in the boreal forest of northern Minnesota. I gently replaced the rock after taking this photo.

Notes:

Citronella ants are so named for the lemony odor they give off when alarmed or crushed. There were quite a few of the darker winged queens beneath the discarded brick preparing to swarm.
