Ceryle rudis
The only black and white kingfisher, with long black bill and short black crest. Medium sized bird, reaching some 25 cm in length. Picture No 1 is a female (lack of second breast band, and two large black patches separated by white gorget), and picture No 2 is male, with two gorgets forming a first large black band, and the second narrow black breast band also visible.
Very common kingfisher, always seen close to the water bodies - impressive style of fishing, with the bird hovering 2 - 3 meters above the water before throwing itself downwards. Here, seen on banks of Awasa lake, one of the Rift Valley lakes in Ethiopia, and a birdwatcher and nature-watcher real paradise...
