Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Medium sized hawk with white checkered wings and barred breast.

Habitat:

Woodlands near rivers and lakes.

Notes:

Two students spotted this guy hanging out near the swings on the playground. It soon flew to some nearby trees. Fun Facts: 1. Red shouldered hawks return yearly to the same nesting areas. 2. The oldest of these hawks on record was just shy of 26 years of age. 3. Greatest threat to these hawks is the clearing of woodland areas.
