Malcolm,it so happened that i visited the Marina recently. As we exited out of the highway, the right turn showed a bird park. We usually go left and we did. once I reached the marina, there were tons and tons of birds in the water. That is when i wished I had binoculars. From far they just looked all the same.
The bird park has the same scenario and is more fun for watching than photographing. We are not allowed to walk thru the marshes. We decided not to go there.

They were far away, I use a 300mm (12x) lens with 16 MP sensor and save in raw format. Heat haze is a problem but I can ID small birds up to 100 metres away, large ones much further. jpg files are no match for this, they just produce a colourful blurred spot!
