A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Buteo jamaicensis
These hawks were photographed at an animal rehabilitation facility run by AWARE (Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort). The organization takes in injured and orphaned wildlife and cares for them with the goal of release back into the wild. These hawks were in one of the flight cages. Soon after I took these pictures, the successfully-rehabilitated hawks were all released :)
The hawk hanging upside down and flapping its wings (far right) was not stuck or in any trouble. It was just trying to scare me off. I had entered the cage to clean it and give the birds their food (dead rats...yum). They also clicked their beaks at me. AWARE takes special care to avoid the animals' bonding to humans, so I was glad the hawks didn't like me!
