Jumping Spider

Athamas whitmeei

Description:

Small salticid (4mm body length), black (the blue sheen is only visible depending on light, as can be seen in picture #3) with bright orange markings (warning colours?) and light brown legs; the first pair of legs is much longer than the others; the palps are "hairy" and it has only six eyes. Does anyone have any information on this guy?

Habitat:

Coastal area with rainforest in tropical climate, just outside of the town Lenakel, on Tanna Island - Vanuatu. I saw this little guy jumping around in my hut.

Notes:

I haven't been able to find out much about the arthropods of Vanuatu, as they seem virtually unexplored. Anyone with similar sightings, I'd love to hear from you.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
