Red-collared widowbird

Euplectes ardens

Description:

The breeding male is unmistakable - all black plumage with a very long black tail - the tail itself can reach up to 30cm of length. Moreover, the breeding male sports a red spot on breast - according to geographic variations, this red can extend to cover also the nape and the crown...

Habitat:

Common bird in savannas and grasslands of Eastern and Southern Africa; here observed in protected savanna zone of Mukuvisi forest, at outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe.

Notes:

Not my best shots, I know I was rather glad that I managed even that - had to shoot from a distance, and this bird is very nervous flyer and in constant movement... it flies in short bursts from one spot to another; and does not stay long in one place.
