Milkweed Tussock Caterpillar

Description:

Family: Erebidae, Subfamily: Arctiinae, Tribe: Arctiini (Although tussock is in its common name, this is a tiger moth caterpillar) Size: 28 mm although these caterpillars can grow up to 35 mm. Striking orange, black and white with "toothbrush-like" hairs. Late in-star. Common and destructive. Milkweed plants are the moth's host.

Habitat:

Open woodlands near the Appalachian Trail. Range: Southern Canada to Florida and Texas.
