Red-backed Fairywren (male non-breeding)

Malurus melanocephalus

Description:

Delicate small active bird native to Australia. Males black and crimson red to scarlet red in breeding plumage, fading more to brown and touch of colour in non-breeding seasons, female shades of brown. Territorial, noisy high pitched chatter, insect eater, lives in small family group.

Habitat:

Found throughout eastern and northern Australia mostly near close to coastal regions. This one in dry coastal woodland environment and established gardens.
