Thanks - I have lots of European starlings in my yard and they are all spotted. Appreciate the explanation, Malcolm.

You can tell these are youngsters by the black bills. They breed in our garden in large numbers and the juveniles have lots of small spots while the parents are all shiny black with yellow bills. 1th October is a little early for the common Starling in this area, they usually appear in November or December.

They are in first winter coats when both have spotted breasts but smaller spots but they have black wings without spots. The Common starling has browner wings with bigger spots all over. By early in the year they will ave worn the spots away while the normal Starlings remain spotted throughout the year. Article and picture here: http://birds-extremadura.blogspot.com.es...
