Cottonmouth

Agkistrodon piscivorus

Description:

Pretty little juvenile. Light brown body with darker brown bands with jagged edges and spots between them. Common defense is to open their mouth wide and show off the white insides; that is where they get their name from. This guy had flattened out his body a lot to try to look bigger and more threatening so we would leave. They are not aggressive and will do everything they can to avoid confrontation with humans.

Habitat:

On the road in a pine plantation with flooded ditches on either side of the road.
