A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Crotalaria lanceolata subsp. lanceolata
A short-lived herbaceous plant, originally from South Africa, but now naturalized in parts of Australia. Considered a weed, it has upright stems that can grow up to 1.7 m tall, and alternately arranged leaves are once-compound with three leaflets (2-10 cm long). Its pea-shaped flowers are arranged in elongated clusters at the top of the plant. These flowers are yellow with reddish-purple veins and a dark patch near base. Its small pods (18-35 mm long and 4-6 mm wide) turn blackish as they mature.
Spotted on a trail in native bushland, in Brisbane Forest Park. Close to the reservoir. This is the only section of the park that I have noticed this species. A common weed of untended areas with fertile soils. It is a weed of closed forests, forest margins, urban bushland, and waterways.
