Spur-winged Plover

Vanellus miles (novaehollandiae)

Description:

Medium size birds, about 20-25cm tall. White body with black capped head and band across the shoulders, solid tan colour back and wings. Yellow mask on the face and yellow beak. LOUD, alarm calling birds. Spend a great deal of their time on the ground.

Habitat:

Seen in open farmland, tussock grasses and reeds.

Notes:

These are terrible photos, but this pair are actually nesting and they were quite alarmed (as plovers always are!) and it was a very cold day so I didn't want to disturb them too much. I will go back for some better photos when it is a bit warmer. The nest is just in front and to the left of the bird on the left in the photo of the two birds together. Just like that on the ground, terribly exposed and unfortunately much vulnerable to our common floods.
