Yellow-Haired Dagger Moth Caterpillar

Acronicta impleta

Description:

Family: Noctuidae, Subfamily: Acronictinae. An uncommon Dagger moth and caterpillar. TL 1.50 inches (3.81 cm). Black with stripe down back, long hairs, off-white and brown tufts and pom poms at both ends of larva. Difficult to tell front or back. Front is covered by pom pom like tufts. Larva feeds on Staghorn sumac but also eats leaves of other deciduous trees such as hickory and walnut.

Habitat:

Woodlands and gardens. This caterpillar found in a small meadow by the roadside with plentiful staghorn sumac trees (found on leaves)

Notes:

First report for my large county of Carbon County, Pennsylvania.

Awesome spotting! I've not seen this one yet. Is it restricted to only Sumacs?
