Common Gliding Lizard

Draco sumatranus

Description:

Small lizard at about 9cm body length and about the same again for the tail. Grey and brown mottling, the head of the males can show blue and he has a bright yellow throat flap (gular fold) that he can communicate with. (Image shown) These guys are basically arboreal and glide from tree to tree using flaps of skin they can spread like wings, along their ribs. This flap is usually a brick clay red colour.

Habitat:

Saw this guy at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve in Northern Singapore. In a lightly forested area.

Notes:

First spotted gliding to a small tree - looked like a big insect until closer examination showed it to be this guy showing of his yellow flag.

Know what you mean Hema. First one I saw flying through the air I mistook for some kind of bug. These are beautiful little critters. Thank you for your comment.
