Nile Monitor

Varanus niloticus

Description:

Large lizard, some 1,5 or 2 m long... to be honest, it is difficult to estimate his length, as he startled us; I came down to this clearing hoping to see some crocos on the other side of river, and at first thought this guy was some sort of log... when he started slightly moving, oh boy... some (not that slight) panic among our ranks... Anyway, rather dark olive skin with ranges of cream color spots. Long and slender tail; nostrils high on the head.

Habitat:

Seen in Awash National park, on banks of river Awash; on the same place where we would usually see some crocos - but on the other side of the river. This fella startled us... The park itself is savanna, with some acacia trees; around the river there is forest, more dense, with bigger trees, housing plenty of birds, monkeys etc...

Notes:

Again, some of my older photos (shot with film camera, and scanned recently) with my memories on Ethiopia.
