Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

This young hawk does not have the barred reddish-peachy underparts, just dark streaks. The head is brownish, dark-and-white checkered wings, and a strongly banded tail. They have long yellow legs.

Habitat:

In low shrub next to a pond and the road in Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Ponds are mostly iced over today.
