Common Eider Duck

Somateria mollissima

Description:

Very far distance off shore so specifics are difficult. Seemed to be a duck-like bird, much larger than a mallard. Appeared to be mostly white and black with grey areas. Light white to yellow beak with a long angled appearance. Side of head does not look like a common eider nor the white chest feather pattern.

Habitat:

Atlantic ocean at the inlet to Boynton Beach. 200 yard off of the jetty.

Notes:

Very difficult to determine exactly but seems to be an eider. This individual has been hanging around the inlet just off shore for the last 3 weekend (that I have noticed) This is as close as it has gotten to the jetty or shore.

I first though he was tethered to something and couldn't move, possibly a fishing line. Then I asked a person on a wave runner to see. The duck then moved. He left after this far off shot was taken.
